June 17th, 1875: Right at the site of today`s STATION-Berlin the Dresden train station is put into operation, enabling passenger traffic between Berlin and Dresden for the following seven years. Also, Prague and Vienna can be reached by destination coach. Due to tensions between the Prussian and the Saxon railway administration it comes to the termination of all operations in 1882 and to the eventual demolition of the building in 1887.
In the course of industrialization in Germany there is an increasing demand for postal services. Existing package hubs cannot meet the demand, which is why the Imperial Postal Directorate decides to build a special train station on the site of today`s STATION-Berlin.
The postal train station with the Post Office 77 at the Luckenwald street is being constructed between 1908 and 1913.
Except from the „Journal of the Association of German Railway Administrations“ from 1913:”...Right and left of the entrance road there are the administrative buildings of the post office, two high buildings, ornamented with mansard gables. The wide road leads directly to the train station. East and West of it, it is lined by two large halls with rounded windows… The eastern one serves as a packing station for exit traffic, the western one as that for incoming traffic and the one in the northern peripheral building as that for urgent parcels. In the South the area is restricted by a administrative building which is crowned by a clocktower. ...The rails leading towards the entrance hall ascend on a ramp to the second floor of the hall. Lifts and slideways take parcels down for further treatment…”
During World War 2 the reloading place is exposed to heavy air raids. Due to the heavy damage, freight cars burst through the two-story arrival packing station, 500,000 packets, parts of the tracks and the courtyard roofing are destroyed. It takes huge effort to restore the original, colorfully decorated revetment and eventually even the stairs can be largely preserved in the original. The previous destruction is followed by the heyday of the post station in Kreuzberg. It becomes the largest package hub in Germany, inheriting all customs clearance of parcel traffic between West Germany and East Berlin and meets half of the Berlin package service. In 1997, the station is shut down due to rationalization and since 2007 it has been in the possession of the PREMIUM Exhibitions GmbH. Since then the halls offer space for events which appreciate the special industrial charm of a former industrial hub.
